Despacito was first released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in the year 2017 and was the top-streamed track within 6 months. This mixture of reggaeton, and pop music did not just draw attention back to the category, but also Latin music all over the world. In 2015 there were two predominantly Spanish-language songs in Billboard's Top 100 and in 2016 there were four. At the peak of Despacito's popularity in 2017, 19 tracks primarily composed in Spanish were in within the top 100. This figure grew to 41 in 2020. Justin Bieber's remix in two languages Despacito was released in 2017. Then, popular artists began working with reggaeton musicians. Drake collaborated with Bad Bunny on MIA (2018), and Madonna was a part of Maluma on Medellin. In 2020, several Reggaeton performers were complaining about how the genre was moving towards mainstream. However, a younger generation Rauw Alejandro was determined to maintain the development. His style often included elements of electronic dance music, in addition to other styles.
